Adam Pavlasek and Joshua Ward-Hibbert reach the Boys’ Singles quarter-finals – Australian Open 2012
In the Junior Boys category at the Australian Open, the 10th seed Czech youngster, Adam Pavlasek, stunned the fifth seed competitor, Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal, to secure a berth in the quarter-final round.
It was a one-hour match, with the 17-year-old Czech winning comprehensively in straight set, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the final-eight of the Grand Slam Down Under.
It was a completely one-sided matchup, with Pavlasek dominating all the way through. The crafty right-hander converted three out of four break opportunities and clinched 24 out of 32 first serve points to drive his superior ranked
opponent out o f the competition with authority. Only two winners were witnessed in the entire matchup, coming from the racquet of Pavlasek.
The Czech youngster will take on the fourth seeded Japanese competitor, Kaichi Uchida, in his next encounter to fight for a place in the semi-final of the mega event in Melbourne.
Another upset result was witnessed later that afternoon, when the ninth seed Serbian competitor, Nikola Milojevic crashed out at the hands of the unseeded Joshua Ward-Hibbert of Great Britain in the third round. The Briton took
71 minutes to register victory in an emphatic fashion, settling the final scores at 6-3, 6-2, to reach the quarter-final draw of the Grand Slam Down Under.
Ward-Hibbert overwhelmed his opponent in straight sets, nailing three out of five break points and securing 32 out of 42 first serve points in the match. He faced 11 break points from his Serbian opponent and amazingly defended
all of them to keep the upper hand throughout the contest. Milojevic frittered away most of his opportunities in the matchup to remain at a disadvantage and eventually crumbled in the second set to let his British opponent through to the final-eight.
Ward-Hibbert will meet the other unseeded Canadian competitor, Filip Peliwo, in the quarter-final draw of the mega event. Peliwo was successful against the Czech competitor, Marek Routa, in the third round, beating him after a
close three-set contest, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Other quarter-finalists include the top seed hot favourite, Luke Saville of Australia, seventh seed Kyle Edmund, American qualifier Mackenzie McDonald and Robin Stanek from the Czech Republic.
