Adam Pavlasek surprises Kaichi Uchida in Boys’ Singles quarter-final – Australian Open 2012
Another surprising outcome was witnessed in the quarter-final rounds of the Boys’ Singles category at the Australian Open championships, with the fourth seed Japanese lad, Kaichi Uchida, crashing out of the competition at the hands
of 10th seed Czech opponent, Adam Pavlasek, on Thursday. He bowed out to the fury of Pavlasek in merely 50 minutes, succumbing in straight sets, 3-6, 3-6, to let the Czech youngster into the semi-finals of the Grand Slam even in Melbourne, Australia.
Pavlasek took hold of the momentum early in the contest and kept on with his winning ways to wrap up the proceedings in the second set. The youngster delivered 67 per cent of his first serve on target and secured 23 out of 28 points
with it to register an emphatic victory. The 17-year-old Czech crafted a total of 10 break opportunities in the entire contest and converted half of them en route to win.
A competitive start to the first set was witnessed, with three successive serve breaks in the opening games. Pavlasek drew the first blood to lead 1-0, followed by a serve break from the Japanese contestant. He broke once again
in the third game to lead 2-1 but Uchida came up with another fitting reply in the sixth game to draw the scores level at 3-3. Pavlasek once again pushed on his accelerator and cracked in two consecutive serve breaks to dismantle his opponent. He closed out
the first set at 6-3 to get one up in the contest.
The 17-year-old kept his momentum rolling in the following set as well and held on his opening two serves. A crushing break point conversion in the fourth game gave him the vital 3-1 lead in the set and he enhanced it further with
a hold of serve to reach 4-1. Uchida was virtually out of the match, trailing 1-4 and appearing in all sorts of trouble with his shot accuracy. Pavlasek stuck to his basics and kept his lead to close out the match at 6-3 without much trouble. He will face
the top seed home favourite, Luke Saville, in the semi-final draw of the tournament.
