Adam Robertson and Maxime Huscenot victorious in Round 1 of Mr. Price Pro Ballito
Second day of Mr. Price Pro Ballito continued at the Surfers Beach in Ballito, South Africa, with the remaining 48 surfers competing in Round of 96 (Round 1) to secure a place in the next round of the competition on Tuesday, July 5th.
The second day kicked off with the 13th heat, which was eventually won by Australia’s Adam Robertson, while South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries finished in second place to stay alive in the event. Australia’s Adrian Buchan and Hawaii’s Kai Barger
rounded out the third and fourth position, consequently getting ejected from the event-title race.
The 14th heat was won by France’s Maxime Huscenot, while French Polynesia’s Alain Riou finished in runner-up place to advance to the next round. The competition came to a premature end for America’s Tanner Gudauskas and Australia’s Tom Whitaker,
who finished in third and fourth place respectively.
During the 13th heat, Robertson got down to business right away, collecting a 5.83 off his very first wave to move ahead of his rivals on the scoreboard. He soon locked another wave to thrown down a critical floater, earning a decisive score of
7.83 for it, and finishing the heat with a two-wave total of 13.66 points.
Vries, who had emerged triumphant during the trails, was unable to outdo Robertson’s second wave and had to eventually settle for second position after scoring 6.67 points off his first wave and 6.00 off his second, finishing with a two-wave total of 12.67
points.
Buchan finished in third position after earning 11.87 points in total from his two best waves, while Barger’s heat-total of 9.96 points put him in last place.
In the next heat, Former Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Junior Champion, Huscenot walk away with top honours after unleashing a string of top-to-bottom snaps. The resultant score of 6.83 and 5.30 allowed him to finish with a two-wave total
of 12.13 points.
Talking to a reporter after the heat, Huscenot said, “It’s really tricky today, yesterday saw amazing conditions and I think I got lucky in the beginning. This is my first interview of the year because I’ve got second or lost during the first round every
event so it feels great to win a heat and make it through.”
Riou also managed to survive the heat after collecting 6.00 and 5.77 off his two best waves. Gudauskas' failure to advance to the next round was clearly an upset. He had to settle for third position after a heat-total of 10.94 points. Whitaker remained the
least impressive surfer during the heat, getting a two-wave total of 9.27 points.
