Adam Scott and Jason Day to lead the Aussie charge at Masters
While many of the top-ranked players in the field will be hoping to land the coveted Masters starting this week, Australian contingent has an altogether different goal to achieve.
Despite producing some of the blazing guns of the sport of the likes of Greg Norman and Geoff Ogilvy, none of the Aussies have ever been successful in taming the notorious Augusta National as yet.
The trio Adam Scott, Jason Day and grizzled Ogilvy had a close encounter with the top spot last year.
Both Day and Scott finished runners-up behind the surprise winner of the event, the South African Charl Schwartzel.
Scott insists that the title will be brought home sooner than later. He said, “I think it makes the story a little juicier”.
31-year-old Scotty has played brilliantly in almost all of his major appearances after turning professional in the year 2000.
He has six top-ten finishes, including the runner-up finish last year at Augusta National. He was among the unfortunate victims of Schwartzel’s rampage on the closing holes, which denied many of the aspiring players to surge to the top.
Scott added, "Last year here was the best I’ve ever putted at any tournament, I three-putted the first green of the tournament, and I didn’t have a three-putt after that for the next 71 holes, which is a good effort around here considering how I had gone in the past". |
"Every time I walk out on the course, I feel like I can have a good score no matter how I’m hitting it".
Meanwhile, Day, the other Aussie runner-up in last year’s showdown, will be back to make yet another attempt for the top slot.
Day played stunning golf all through the stretch last season but was not able to bag a title.
He recovered from his early loss in the opening round at Augusta National last year and is hoping to utilise his experience from his first Masters appearance.
Day said, “This is, for me, the Holy Grail to win this tournament. I do believe that an Australian will win it soon”.
The event will kick off with the Champions Dinner at the sprawling Augusta National Clubhouse.
