Adam Scott decides to face Tiger Woods in Australian Open with Steve Williams on his bag
Adam Scott, the professional Australian golfer, has apparently made a U-turn to compete in the upcoming Australian Open scheduled in November, instead of defending the Singapore Open he won last year.
Australian Open is one of the high profile events on the calendar where many of the top ranking players tee-off for the coveted title which has been held in continuation for more than 100 years.
“It was a tough one for me, Barclays and the Singapore Open have been big supporters of mine, but the Australian Open is really tough to pass up and I am going to be playing in Sydney,” Scott told Channel 10. “I think it's the right move for me,
I really want to get down there and win the Australian Open again.”
Woods, who has recently announced his return to the course after an 11-week-long rehab, has caused many of the players to re-set their respective schedules for the rest of the year. Woods’ decision to play at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at his favourite
hunting ground, the Firestone Country Club has been keeping the critics on their toes for the recent developments in this regard.
Scott, who has played brilliantly for good part of the season, is eager to play alongside the 14-major-winner, especially given the fact that he will have Woods’ 12-year-long trusted caddie Steve Williams on his side.
“He's a really competitive guy and the fire is still burning, he can also see it burning in me and I'm getting after it,” Scott said over his association with Williams.
Runner-up in this year’s Masters, Scott has done well to soar in the rankings and is currently ranked number 17 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). He failed to make the cut at the US Open at Congressional but returned to post another joint 25th finish
alongside the US Open champion Rory McIlroy.
The 31-year-old Scott has won 19 professional events in his career and is also the winner of the 2009 Australian Open. He has a joint eighth finish at the Open Championship in 2006 and another joint third at the PGA Championship the same year. Scott is more
concerned about his inclusion at the Presidents Cup team which is scheduled later in the year and is hoping to post a strong finish to improve his chances for the selection.
“If I win the Australian Open, I'll be very happy going into the Presidents Cup,” said Scott who has was part of the President’s Cup team on four occasions including 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009.
Apart from Scott’s performance on the turf, what would be of more interest to both the critics as well as the audience will be Woods and Williams response representing the opposite stands for the first time in 12 years. Williams was the latest victims in
Woods’ long list of terminated employees, when the champion fired Williams without citing reasons. Many of the close associates of Woods have pointed towards Williams’ decision to caddie for Scott despite warnings from Woods. Williams, however, has rendered
Woods’ decision as mind boggling and described his association with Woods for the last two troublesome years going to complete waste.
The fact that Williams hails from the neighboring New Zealand, the duo shares certain similarities in their perspectives towards the sport. Scott’s recent surge in the high profile events owes much of its part to the invaluable advice he receives from his
caddie while on the course. It’s an uncontested fact that Woods went over to win many of his major titles in presence of Williams on his bags and both remained close friends until Woods broke headlines with his extra marital affairs.
