Adam Scott edges past the field in the first round of WGC Bridgestone Invitational
Adam Scott has now gained an outright lead at the latest episode of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at the Firestone Country Club, Akron, Ohio, after his stunning first round score of eight-under, 62. Scott, who was supported by Steve Williams on the bag,
pulled in a whooping eight birdies without dropping a shot on his first 18 holes.
“I played extremely solid today. The first 15 holes, I struck the ball beautifully and drove it in the rough the last three holes. But other than that, I mean, everything was right in the spot where I wanted it. Conditions were perfect for scoring,” said
Scott.
Tiger Woods also played well in the first round of the event coming out of an extended break of 11 weeks. Woods fired Williams last month without citing specific reasons and is currently playing with his old friend and business partner Bryon Bell.
Woods has won seven times at WGC Bridgestone Invitational on his 11 starts always with Williams on his bag. The 14-major-winner shot two-under, 68 on the first day to settle for joint 18th. On a question of Williams' influence on his performance
so far for the season, Scott replied,
“I don't know, he just seems to have a lot of good rounds in him around this place, that's for sure. He didn't think it was a big deal to shoot 62. It was normal,” Scott added.
This was Scott’s best performances so far, leveling his career best score of 62. This is also the lowest first round score ever posted in the tournament’s history. The 31-year-old Australian has not won a single event yet on the PGA Tour in 2011 but has
performed remarkably well so far. This is the eighth time Scott has held the first round lead and will be eager to capitalize on it in the proceeding rounds.
Jason Day, the runner-up at both the Masters and the US Open, finished for an outright second with an equally stellar performance on the first day. He carded a score of seven-under, 63 to fall behind Scott by one shot. Nick Watney grabbed an outright third
with his score of five-under, 65, falling behind the leader by three shots.
