Adam Scott finally wears the green jacket, wins the Masters Tournament
Adam Scott drained a 20-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole of the Masters Tournament, and heard a roar from the crowd. He then turned around and hugged his caddie, Steve Williams. What a moment that was. Yes, Scott became the first Australian ever
to wear the ‘green jacket’, after defeating Angel Cabrera at Augusta National on Sunday, April 14, 2013.
“What an incredible day — everything fell my way in the end, I guess,” said the Australian, who finished with a three-under par in the final round to force the game to enter into the sudden death playoffs with Cabrera, who carded a 2-under par score on day
four.
“It’s amazing that it’s my destiny to be the first Aussie to win, just incredible,” he said. “Australia is a proud sporting nation and this is one notch in the belt that we had never got.”
Talking to the reporters, he also paid tribute to Greg Norman, who he praises as his childhood idol.
“It was one guy who inspired a nation of golfers, and that is Greg Norman,” Scott said. “Part of this definitely belongs to him.”
Jason Day, another Australian, managed to record a top-five finish, as he finished two strokes back to take the third spot on the leaderboard.
Brandt Snedeker, who started his final round campaign while sharing the top spot with Cabrera, failed to keep his momentum going into the last 18 holes, and faltered for a 75 to finish tied sixth in the tournament.
Cabrera, who played amazingly well throughout the tournament, was really disappointed after missing the birdie putt on the second extra hole in the playoffs. His try for birdie was all in sane, after the ball stopped at the edge of the cup.
“The only one thing in my head was winning,” Cabrera, who expected his last putt to fall, said, adding, “Sometimes you make those putts, sometimes you just miss them, but that’s golf.”
Tiger Woods, who was playing for his 15 major title victory, had to share the fourth spot on the leaderboard, after finishing four strokes behind the playoff duo, Scott and Cabrera.
