Adam Turpish knocks Darryl Cunningham senses out in fifth round despite getting injured – Boxing News
Adam Turpish, the incumbent NABA light middleweight champion, defied all odds and collected an impressive rather intimidating fifth round knockout win over Darryl Cunningham, the current World Boxing Foundation All Americas light heavyweight champion, in
a 10-round bout which was held on April 17, 2012.
The duo met at the ring stretched at Royal York Hotel situated in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and headlined the whole pay-per-view. The event was co-headlined by the eight-round non-title bout between Anthony Russell and Steve Franjic.
Adam, 33, was seriously overshadowed by his Tuesday night’s opponent as far as the experience is concerned. The Canadian proud was entering in his career’s 11th bout and boasted an undefeated 10-bout win streak. Turpish is considered as the best light middleweight
knockout pounder in his hometown and boasts seven of his wins by knockout.
His opponent, Darryl, though resides far in the world rankings yet is considered as a lethal opponent who has been in a total 28 bouts and emerged victorious in 25. He has nailed just 10 opponents by KO and lacks the ability to collect swift knockout wins.
In addition to the experience factor, Adam was up against a southpaw, another facet that created bit difficulty for the surging Canadian proud. The scenario of the whole bout changed and was somewhat considered in favour of Darryl when he injured Adam substantially
by a head butt that lacerated latter’s upper and lower part of left eye.
As a result of the deep cut, Adam’s face got bloodied but he did not lose his control over the game. After that first round injury, it was expected that Darryl will capitalise the moment but Adam thwarted all his plans and threw straight forward heavy fists
that connected well and Darryl got stunned in the fifth round after the passage of just one minute and 30 seconds.
After the bout, the proud Adam commented, “I couldn’t really see very well, but he wasn’t a hard guy to find ... he was right in front of me most of the fight. He was in survival mode after I dropped him twice in the opening round, but after my eye was cut,
I knew I had to end it as quickly as possible.”
During the telephonic interview, Turpish revealed as to how he was able to cater the southpaw problem and said, “Cunningham being a southpaw was no big adjustment, because I sparred a lot with the McLellan brothers from B.C., and one of them is a southpaw.
I was really ready for this one.”
With this win the Canadian number one has strengthened his streak by one more win and now has 11 wins in 11 bouts. Darryl, on the other hand, has collected his career’s fourth defeat and the second in his last five bouts.
