Adam Wicheard and David McLellan win their first round matches at Q School Day-2
More than 100 snooker players are making their efforts in the Q School to grab a spot among the Top-12 and hold a tour card for the 2011-12 season. The second day of the Q School featured 12 matches in the afternoon and evening sessions, and ended successfully at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield.
The afternoon session started at 4pm with the match between Lee Page and David McLellan where Page defeated McLellan with a convincing score line of 4-2 to cruise past into the next round. McLellan stunned Page with the first frame win at 58-74 after he potted a decent clearance of 30 but Page capitalised in the next two frames cracking breaks of 63 and 31 to make it 2-1.
McLellan bounced back with a fine knock of 38 and pulled level at 2-2. After that, Page didn’t let his opponent settle in the match and took the next two frames to win the best-of-seven frame match with 4-2 on the score board.
Meanwhile, Adam Wicheard started his campaign to grab his tour card with a stunning 4-1 win over Tony Else in the afternoon session. The 25-year-old is one of those players who have the tendency to pick a tour card for the season 2011-12.
Wicheard was on the tour last season but could not make it to the Top-64 and failed to qualify for the advanced stages of any ranking or non-ranking event last year. However, he showed a sensational performance in the Players Tour Championship (PTC) with tremendous wins over the former World Champion, Graeme Dott, and 2011 World Snooker Championship finalist, Judd Trump.
He suffered from a horrifying neck injury five years back at the age of 20 and was at the brink of quitting snooker, however, he somehow regathered himself and made a strong come-back into the game, after spending four months in the hospital.
In other matches at Q School, Christopher Norbury, Robert Valiant, Liam Monk, Fraser Patrick and Michael Leslie grabbed 4-0 whitewash victories over Augusto Ruckauf, Matthew Simpson, Lyndon Gordon, Bhavesh Sodha and Simon Bevz respectively and moved into the next round.
