My wireless adapter connects to the router, but I still can't get on the internet. After troubleshooting several times with both ISP and manufacturer of adapter, I am being told by both that it has something to do with the settings on my computer. Any ideas on what it could be or where I could begin to check? One of them mentioned it could be some sort of firewall that is preventing me from getting on the internet. I checked my antivirus software, and it's not that.

  1. I had this problem for about a year before finally just getting a new router.  The broadband people kept telling me it was a setting on my computer or something, but it wasn't. It would connect every once in a while, but finally just quit. It was the router. It was a Linksys router. If you have a Linksys router, get a different one is my suggestion.

  2. They both concluded that they couldn't figure it out, and it wasn't their fault!

Bravo! Your Windows firewall settings MIGHT be interfering, but I doubt it. Are you running ZoneAlarm or any other 3rd party walls?

People just LOVE to say "oooh oooh. You gotta change your FIREWALL.. Yeah. FIREWALL must be cocking everything up.

Most likely scenario here is that you are running Windows Vista, and that you are using a USB adapter to get your wireless running. Vista has some problems with USB wireless. I don;t know how to explain it exactly. Sometimes they connect up just fine, but the traffic just doesn't pass.

If on the otherhand you are doing this with XP you can try removing your USB hardware from device manager and rebooting. It's possible you have a driver problem.

    This is a bit tricky.

Reset EVERYTHING and do it unencrypted to see if it works for testing purposes.

    I dunno..

    Stabbin' blindly in th' dark.

  3. first check the time and date onthe lower right corner make sure they are correct then, go to tools form your browser and interent options and see if its blocked in securtiy if so unblock. then call them backa nd tell them to be more specific!

you also can disable your firewall and see if this helps!
