Adcock and Bankier beat rival duo of Robertson and Wallwork in Swiss Open
The British mixed doubles pair Chris Adcock-Imogen Bankier raised their chances for the 2012 London Olympics by beating their compatriots Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork in pre quarter-finals of Swiss Open on March 15, 2012.
The World Number 14 duo Adcock-Bankier bagged the thrilling victory by beating their opponents with final score of 19-21, 21-11 and 25-23.
Both pairs are locked in a tense Olympic qualification tussle and only one pair with higher ranking will make into the mega event. The tension ratcheted up as the both teams were looking to pocket some valuable ranking points before the period ends.
The mixed doubles experts Adcock and Bankier forged a great combination throughout the match and put a great show of skills. After having a little sluggish start they managed to build up their pace and snatched the final two match points.
The World Number 17 duo Robertson-Wallwork stunned them with their breath-taking performance in opening set of the match and clinched the crucial match point with 21-19 score on the board.
Adcock-Bankier displayed their craft when it mattered and outclassed their rival compatriots with a convincing margin of 21-11 in the second set. They made a pretty big statement by levelling the lead with a huge 10 points difference in score log.
The third set turned consequential as both teams were feeling the heat. The female member of victorious pair, Imogen Bankier admitted that they were living on the edge throughout the battle.
She said, "It was one of the hardest matches we have played and was really quite stressful. It was very tense on court and I think we were all quite nervy at the end."
The top British mixed doubles couple Adcock-Bankier managed to stay on course to success by grabbing the epic third set tussle 25-23 final score. They had to stretch hard to score a final game point as four times their opponents Robertson-Wallwork caught
them on the score board.
However, they finally swept the board with their superb performance but they are not ready to sit back and celebrate as Imogen Bankier has set high targets to achieve.
She said, "After this win we don't intend to be complacent. They have been in good form so we want to make the most of another quarter-final appearance. But it's quite hard to lift yourself after a big effort like this."
They are now up against the Japanese pair Kenichi Hayakawa-Misaki Matsutomo in the quarter-finals of Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold.
