Hi, since my other half and I are now married can I add his name to my credit cards making us both responsible for the debt? I dont want him just to be a card holder but actually on the account. Also will the credit card company reduce my credit limit if he has a bad credit score? Thanks?

  1. bad idea - think of what will happen when you break up and dont say you wont cos that is the culture of our society

  2. You can add his name to the card but will need to declare this in writing and he needs to supply ID if applicable.

His credit score will be taken into account and your limit may well be reduced but all lenders have different scoring criteria.

  3. I firmly believe that you should never share your credit with anyone.  I speak from experience.  If something happens, the debt is and always will be yours even if you add his name because you are the original account holder.

If it's a joint account, then both are responsible. But, if one can not pay, or does not pay, then the other becomes fully responsible for the entire debt.

You might have to open another account in both your names as a joint account, other wise he would be just an authorized user.

  4. you can add your husband without the card compny lowering your limit. I had horrible credit and I got on my husband card. They didn't even ask for my ss#

  5. To get a joint account, you would have to apply together.  You can probably do this on the phone by calling your current card company.

As to what you mention in the additional details, just remember that even if you cut up a card, the other person can still request a new card.

If you're concerned about his credit, why don't you have him get his free annual copy of his reports and see what's there before getting a joint account?  Have him go to www.annualcreditreport.com (this is the offical one - pay no attention to all those commercials for other sites).
