Question:

Adding Fish to a new Tank.?

I just bought a 10 gallon Aquarium that I fixed. I let it run for a day and then added 2 fish, Zebra Danios from an existing tank. However I still have 2 more fish, Glowlight Tetras, in the existing tank that I have to transfer into it, because in another of my tanks the filter broke down so I have to move a Betta into the existing tank and move the Tetras into the 10 gallon Aquarium. Is it safe to do so on Sunday which would be 2 days after I added the Danios? Also, just to let you know, I added some aquarium bacteria which has helped before in my aquariums. I plan to do water changes every 3 days for a week, then every 5 days for 2 weeks, then weekly for a month, and finally every 2 weeks. Thanks

  1. It seems like if you must add these fish you might have to do water changes more frequently but then that will prolong your cycle. Maybe you can put water from your existing tank (assuming it is cycled) into your new tank to kick start the process a bit more?

  2. Your tank still won't be cycled and your fish will begin dying very soon. I'd guess after the second or third week.

  3. this can be done but water changes will need to be pretty frequent (1-2 times a week) some might say that more often would help but in my experience if you dont allow some of the ammonia and nitrite accumulate a little the bacteria will take forever to establish itself. A good way to help yourself a little would be to take some of the filter media from your existing tank preferably an older piece thats been in there a while and transfer it to the new tank and kinda rinse it out in the new tanks water to transfer some of the established bacteria to the new tank, or you could just leave a piece of it in the filter for a few weeks to help this process. (this will only work if you have 0 chlorine in the new tank, chlorine will instantly kill all the beneficial bacteria) and also use as much of the water from the already cycled tank as possible. It can be done safely for your fish but it can be a pain. these are the only tricks i know but i learned them from yahoo so I'm sure there's more you could do.  Good Luck!

  4. Those fish are pretty tough... you should be fine adding them, use some of their water and add it to the new tank when you acclimate them.

  5. I would say that if your existing tank is cycled maybe you could use a bit of that water for your new tank as long as the levels are safe. Adding bacteria has helped my tanks as well and usually helps out and aids in keeping the fish alive. I would say if you have to add them but keep an eye out for signs of illness, test the water and try not to change the water too often, let the water cycle. The water will most likely turn a little cloudy while cycling and should cleae up in a couple days! good luck! :]
