Adding RAM to PC question?

Question

Is there any problems or drawbacks to adding RAM of different speeds to my computer? The RAM would be from the same company... but the RAM currently is 1GB (two 512MB 184 Pin) and I am thinking about adding 4GB(two 2GB 240 Pin) but both are the SAME brand.

You should ideally have all of the RAM the same speed.  If you mix speeds the RAM will work at the slowest speed.  If you have 184 pin RAM now that means that all RAM HAS TO BE 184 pin.  It doesn't matter if you have the same manufacturer or not.  You can go to http://www.crucial.com and/or http://www.kingston.com.  There you can enter the brand and model of computer you have and they'll show you what RAM works in your computer and the manufacturer's recommendation of the maximum RAM your motherboard will take,. You can even have them scan your computer if you don't know the info and will also tell you how many memory slots you have.  You should get 4 GB but depending on your operating system and what type of graphics you have some of it may not be shown.

They won't work, they must have the same number of pins.  You must find the exact same type of memory with a higher capacity.

You cant add 240 pin ram to 184 pin slots. Also it,s not recommended to have 2 different speed ram.

Owch..... mkay well, when u add 2 types of ram to your computer, it will be very unstable and might  crash every like 3 minutes.... i strongly recommend that is is the same speed, and the same amount. for example

2gs of 533 + 2gs of 533, regardless of the brands.  try not to add an odd number of ram... this will also make your pc unstable.

184 goes/w 184 and 240 goes/w 240

it's like an electrical plug for 110 V  has a different shape than a plug for 220V...but in order to save you the difference in cost, as that is proably the reason you are trying to use DDR2 mem cards in a DDR

mem slot...your computer will only recognize three anyway so you can get one of the 2G and one of a 1G (DDR 184 pin) and it will cost about the same as the two 2G 240 DDR2 that you were going to get.

And yes you can use DDR ram that way, but you can't use DDR2 ram like that....

You cannot upgrade your RAM as you have described.  You have 184 pin sockets so you cannot install memory modules with 240 pins - they are incompatible.  You have to stay with 184 pin memory modules and it is always a good idea to install idenical modules - don't mix different speed modules.  Also, if you are running 32-bit Windows operating system, your system cannot use more than 3 GB of memory even though you can physically install more than that.  The upper memory addresses are used for mapping I/O which effectively makes most memory above 3GB unaccessible.

this number has to be the same as the second ram

no, i dont think it would work,

because theres a big difference in speed in between both RAMS

and they might be a big difference in speed in between both RAMS,

and the clock speed of tha ram has to be compatible with tha bus speed of tha motherboard

RAM has two measurements:

*clocking speed

*Storage

but storage is more inportant
