Adding Subtitles to VLC Media player?

I have some movies in .avi format on my computer and i wanna put the subtitles on them because they are Korean.

I have the .avi and the .sub in the exact same name and in the exact same folder.

I also went into Setting>Prefences> then I expanded the Video tab and went into Subtitles/OSD then I chose the .sub file in the "Use Subtitle File" box and I also have Autodetect Subtile file selected and under advanced options i have "subtitle autodetction paths" i have .sub in the box.

I have tried everything I could think of..can anyone help me?
