Question:

Adding a kitten to my house with my 9 year old cat?

I have an indoor cat now who is 9 years old. My vet told me it would help my cat to live longer if we got another cat. There is a kitten that I just love and would like to bring it home. My cat doesn't like other cats now, she will hiss and run away. My cat is also not sociable, only comes out in the evenings.

If we get a kitten will my cat adjust quickly without marking her territory on my carpet? Also, do you think it will make her more sociable?

Should I have two litter boxes or just one?

Any other suggestions that would help the transition would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Your cat is not going to greet this new cat with open arms unless it is to swat it. She most likely will never totally like the new cat but will learn to tolerate it. She will get much more exercise from being chased or chasing the other cat. It does help as far as the physical health but her mental health will be quite upset for a while. I have seen this with my cats. They all coexisted but none were thrilled. I have never had a cat start marking when another comes in.

  2. adopt a cat and you should get 2 litter boxes

  3. older cats are usually friendly to babies. i would get another litter box. give plenty of attention to the adult cat. watch them in case the older kitty gets jealous

  4. You can add a kitten if you like, BUT  make sure you can watch how they act in the beginning, also try to make sure the kitten has KITTEN FOOD and DOES NOT eat the cats food. The main reason is that cat food can make kittens sick or possibly hurt the mouths.
