  1. If the child is under two years of age, and you are on a domestic flight, then the child can fly for free. However, the child does not get a seat. You have to hold him/her for the entire trip. Just call the airline and tell them so that they can note on the reservation that an infant is traveling.

If the child is over 2, or if you want a seat so that you don't have to hold him/her, then you need a reservation and a ticket. The price is not affected by whether the child is on the reservation with someone else. The price is whatever it is. Airline computers don't have the capability to add more people to an existing reservation. They'll just create a new reservation and cross-reference it with yours. Just call the airline or your travel agent to make arrangements.

  2. If the baby can sit on your lap, there is no charge.  However, you cannot check in online from home -- you and the baby have to appear at the ticket counter to check in.

  3. It matters whether it's an international flight or not. But assuming it's a (U.S.) domestic flight, the baby (on lap) costs nothing. But you DO have to tell the airline there is going to be a baby traveling with you. Among other things, it affects what seats you can be assigned.

  4. You should contact the airline you're using to ask for specific details... but the baby if under 2 usually doesn't cost anything extra, and doesn't really need to be registered. You just need to let the airline know that the baby will be coming (because the baby doesn't occupy a seat - only sits on lap). But to be sure, contact the airline because each airline has different policies. Hope you have a great trip!
