Adding special effects to video?

ok for klass i taped of 3minute video and i want to add captioning to it. how do i do that

BTW: i used a digital camera andn it uploads to real player adn windows media

I would use windows movie maker try that its on all windows and if you have a mac use imovie, email me if u have any questions
