Can anyone recommend additives to add to boat outboard fuel to improve performance and for anti-sludge/corrosive/dirt?

  1. each motor company has their own "brand". basically you will want to add ring free to your fuel during the time you will be running it and add a fuel stabalizer when you plan to put it up and not use it for 30 days or more...

"Carbon Guard", I'm not big on fuel additives but, this stuff really works, I checked the spark plugs after 1 season of use and they were squeeky clean, it's not too exspensive 1 oz. treats 8 gallons of fuel, so it's pretty economical, "Carbon" build up is the No. #1 "Killer" of two stroke engines, this stuff keeps the fuel burning clean, Gasoline has never been so poor in quality, as it is NOW, "Alcohol" is now added to the fuel, and "Alcohol" is "Hydroscopic" (it has an affinity towards water, it attracts water into the fuel) NOT GOOD for a boat motor and fuel tank surrounded by water. Fuel now "Sours" and gets varnishy after only 30 days of storage, it breaks down and it's quality is compromised even with Fuel stabilizer added, it's best to start with FRESH FUEL, save the old stuff for the lawn mower, it's less expensive to replace the lawn mower, than the outboard engine.

  5. Since you mentioned Sludge I assume it's a 4-stroke engine.

    Over the years I have used no additives, either to the fuel or the engine oils for both 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines.

    I have basically used high octane petrol, besides giving more HP the fuel companies (in Australia at least) include additives which keep injectors and carburettors pretty clean and reduces the carbon build up.

    As for the Oil I use Penrite Oils which is a premium oil. It all translates to a better running and lasting engine and cheaper mtce. Mind you frequent oil changes don't hurt either.

    All boils down to regular Mtce.

    If you have an old boat engine say with injection, if you introduce additives you run the risk of dislodging gum from the fuel lines and clogging the injector/s. Happened to me on a car and was advised not to do it.
