Question:

Addresses as Gaeilge?

I’m getting my passport renewed and I have the form as Gaeilge and as always I will put my name as Gaeilge on my passport.

I fill the whole thing out as Gaeilge too.

Except the part where it asks for my address (so they can post me the passport).

I put that in English.

This time though I was wondering about putting it in Irish.

I know legally imp allowed. You are allowed to conduct all your business through Irish and I know what my full address is as Gaeilge.

But I was wondering if I put it as Gaeilge will the passport ever get to me?

Like if my address was,

24 long street

Big town

Capital city

Dublin

And I put it as,

24 sráid fada

Baile mór

Príomhchathair

Baile Átha Cliath

Would they be able at the sorting office to figure out where that is? Let alone the postman?

I won’t risk it cause the passport costs me.

But what do you think?

Has anyone tried to send a letter to an address as Gaeilge?

I might send one to myself as an experiment.

  1. i say it should get to you but to be safe put it in english on the application and do like you said an experiment to see if it will get to you.i think its great your using the irish not many people use it in everyday life .slan leat

  2. well usually if the head sorting office receives a letter in a foreign language, they have someone translate it and write it down on a sticker alongside the original address. although irish is our native language, most people don't understand it, so that's how they do it too!

  3. Thats a good question.

Im not sure if they could really.

My postman could because he know my name as soon as he saw it he would know the house.

Ive no idea if the sorting office could though. They probably could, i imagine that any letters that cant be sorted by machine get sorted by hand and they would look at it and figure it out.

Since every street and place name in Ireland has to be translated into Irish they must have a list of them all somewhere.

I might try it too and see if it works.
