Adhd in toddlers?

my daughter was born 8 weeks preemie. she is now almost 2 and ever since she could crawl she has been on the go.....never stopping unless she is sleeping. her dr has suggested screening for autism but i think se is too hyper for that. she, in my opinion, is way above the norm for engery for a toddler and for a girl. my nephew of the same age is calmer, listens more, and is less hyper. my sister doesnt pay any attention to him, but i play with and spend all day with my daughter. what could her hyperactiveness be? im worried that her prematurity has something to do with it.

  1. Her hyperactiveness may just be her personality, thats the case for my daughter!  She is insane! (in a good way lol)  It gets frustrating at times but she has an awesome demeaner and is tons of fun but NON STOP 24/7 oh my god.  Thats just her, and maybe thats just your daughter too!  My sisters boy is so calm hes a zombie..boooring.  Enjoy her, don't try to find something wrong with her!  ADHD is handed out left and right, don't fall for it!

  2. Kids are kids, and two is WAY to early to diagnose adhd. I am surprised that someone would use hyperactivity to diagnose autism, does she have language delays? Does she have a hard time playing with toys or pretending? Does she have a hard time connecting to her primary caregivers?

Please do not compare her to your nephew. That's not fair to either one of them. She is who she is, for now, and until her activity level is disruptive to her life (like, with my son, he couldn't eat, even when he was hungry because it "hurt his brain" to sit still long enough to put a bite in his mouth) THAT is adhd.

  3. I too had a preemie, it has nothing to do with being born earlier.  ADHD in A LOT of cases is pure lack of discipline, structure and rules.  If your doctor is suggesting tests for autism, get them done.  These children are "hyper".  If your daughter has had the MMR shot, there is a greater chance that she has developed autism.  It is something that is in some children's genes and the ingredients in the immunization activate the austim in some of those children.  The tests won't hurt.  At least you will know.  Would you rather have a child that you can work with if she has autism or a child drugged up on chemicals for the rest of their life, which by the way, leads to drug addiction because they are dependent on something to keep them "normal".  Children at this age ARE hyper anyway.  You cannot get a 2 year old to sit still.  Follow your doctors advice.

  4. I went thru the  same thing with my son.  I ook him to mental health when he was 2.  And was diagnosed with adhd.  You need to be very stern and simply say, "Hey, my child is more hiper thatn normal 2 yr olds"  Be very blunt and to the point.  They will listen.  Good luck to you:)

  5. Stop comparing your child to your nephew.  She isn't your nephew.  She isn't his clone.  Every single child on this earth is an individual with their own individual personallites.  Nothing you have posted would indicate she is ADHD or even hyperactive.  Sounds like a normally active child to me.
