Aditya Mehta eyes glory on professional circuit after winning maiden national title – Snooker news
Aditya Mehta of Mumbai, who recently defeated his Petroleum Sports Promotion Board teammate, Alok Kumar, by a frame score match of 6-2 in the final of the 78th National Snooker Championship on August 9, 2011 to claim his maiden national title, is now aiming
to become the highest ranked Indian on the professional circuit.
Previously, Geet Sethi, Yasir Merchant and Manan Chandra have managed to qualify for the professional circuit and Mehta is pretty close to becoming the fourth Indian to qualify for the professional circuit.
However, the newly crowned champion has his eyes set on Yasir Merchant’s record who in the 1990’s was the highest ranked Indian at the age of 65.
Mehta said, “My next target is to better the record of Yasin Merchant on the professional circuit. I want to surpass his record as the highest ranked Indian on the circuit.”
The 25-year-old Mehta told the media being on the professional circuit has always been his dream as he believes only the best players of the world can make it there.
Mehta revealed he will leave for London in a few days and will participate in professional tournaments there.
“It was always my dream to play in the highly demanding professional circuit. Only the cream of world snooker makes it to the professional tour, and to play at the highest level just excites me. I will be leaving for London shortly where I presently reside
and, for the next few weeks, I will be busy participating in the pro circuit tournaments in the UK, Germany, Belgium, Poland and Ireland,” he said.
Mehta qualified for the professional circuit back in 2009 but failed to reach the last 64 as he could not qualify. Therefore the Indian knows only qualifying for the circuit is not what he wants.
There are almost 20 tournaments on the professional tour which started on June 20, 2011. Let’s see whether Aditya Mehta is able to clinch glory or not.
