Question:

Adjust lighting for computer usage? (advice, please)?

I'm on the computer regularly, and recently I've started to consider the health of my eyes.

I'm curious, which is safer for you, to go on your computer in a brightly lit room or in a dimly lit one?

Also, how should I balance the room lighting with the computer monitor's lighting? (i.e. should one be really bright and the other one dim, etc.)

I just want the "healthiest" setting for my eyes so they don't continue to be stressed. I appreciate any help and insight, thank you!

  1. A well-lit room is best.  Basically have the screen and the room the same brightness to reduce eyestrain.  Also make sure there is no glare on the screen--don't have a lamp or window behind you.

    Some other tips:

-Have your screen at least arm's length away, further if possible.

-Have the screen slightly lower than eye level.

-Use some eyedrops or remember to blink frequently to keep your eyes lubricated.

-Every 20 minutes, look away 20 feet for 20 seconds.

-Take longer breaks if you are on the computer for a long time (a few hours).

-Make sure to get eye checkups with your optometrist as needed (every one or two years).

  2. A brightly lit room would be better.  I would turn down the brightness on your computer screen if your eyes feel stressed.

I wasn't thinking about it until i stumbled upon this question and i turned the brightness down, much better haha.
