I've been homeschooled almost my whole life, and I've recently been accepted into Stanford University. Will it be a difficult adjustment? How should I make the transition easier?

  1. It depends on your personality

  2. commuting or dorming,

If dorming it's like summer camp

You will have to get used to going to class rooms and auditoriums, labs and research libraries

You will have to get used to work day and night and weekends as required.

You will have to learn to be on small teams 2-5 people

You will hve to learn to take lecture notes

You will have to learn to do indy research outside box or book.  They want you to prowl the stacks looking for material from a diverse range.

You will have to learn to walk from class to class

You will be doing three times more work than before and on a time table.

It's nothing super hard, but brick schoolers have an edge on the classroom and walking thing, but not much of an edge

Stanford is one or two square miles while a brick school is half a block.

  3. Yes, it will be hard.  Why? Because going to school is more than learning reading, writing and math; it involves the socialization process.  There are many adults who never learned to socialize during the school years and now find it hard adjusting to real-life.  Hey, I'm one of them.

  4. I had a similar situation, except I went to community college first and then transferred to a four-year college, which made the transition sort of easy.

I guess schoolwork-wise, just be prepared to deal with teachers who have all different kinds of personalities and criteria.  College is a lot of work, but if you're going to Stanford, I'm guessing you're prepared for that.

Socially, just stay involved in things.  Get to know people...join clubs.

All-in-all, I don't think my transition from homeschool to college was too terribly difficult...so don't worry too much!

  5. I was home schooled. I didn't have really any problems at all, in fact I seemed better prepared for it than a lot of the high school grads who seemed to have developed habits of "coasting" that didn't really work in college.  Now, I went to a community college at first, so I'm sure that was easier, but you probably won't have much trouble.  Mainly I had to just get used to taking notes and taking exams and writing papers with deadlines and so on, after  the first few weeks I got the hang of it pretty well.

  6. Not an answer to your question, but...

    Congratulations!!!!!!

That is awesome that you are going to Stanford.

You'll do just fine.  No matter how you were educated, college is an adjustment for everyone.

You will probably do better than most.
