Southampton boss, Nigel Adkins, let out his disappointment over his side’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Leeds United in the Capital One Cup fourth round match on Tuesday.
The Saints went into the game with a hope of redeeming themselves, after going down 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur at home in an EPL match during the weekend.
The defeat left the Premier League newcomers entrenched in the relegation zone, while further plunging Adkins managerial career at the Saint Mary’s Stadium into uncertainty.
Their aim of bolstering their confidence and returning back to winning ways was quashed by the Peacocks, who recorded a commanding 3-0 triumph at Elland Road to send the Saints packing out of the competition.
The loss will only serve to pile further misery on the manager, who has already suffered seven league defeats so far this season.
While talking to the reporters after the match, the 47-year old admitted that their elimination from the League Cup had created a downbeat atmosphere in the dressing room.
He said that he was confident of progressing into the next round as he had fielded his best possible team on Tuesday, but feels that the pressure of not having bagged wins prior to the game got the better of them.
“The mindset before the game was to be very positive. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emmanuel-Mayuka-c12557 and Steve De Ridder are blessed with an outstanding amount of pace so the objective was to get on the front foot by utilising that and getting in behind,” he told the reporters.
“It was a very attacking formation on paper, but on the pitch you have got to go and produce it… There’s obviously going to be consequences of the result and performance for many people.”
The manager then went on to defend his decision of introducing myriad changes for the match. He said that they had just played a game against Spurs about 48 hours ago, and he had to take into consideration factors such as the fitness and the level of fatigue
of the players.
Southampton will next play West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Monday.
