Southampton boss, Nigel Adkins, has insisted that he is not thinking too much about going against his former club, when the Saints take on Liverpool in a league match at Anfield on Saturday.
The Englishman started his footballing career at the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385 – another club based in Merseyside – in 1983, making 86 domestic appearances for them as a goalkeeper.
Later, he also represented Wigan Athletic before concluding his playing career at Bangor City.
After having guided the Saints to the English top-flight this season, the 47-year old experienced a turbulent start to life at Premier League. However, he was able to stem the tide over the last couple of weeks, helping his side collect 8 points from their
last 4 matches, which included wins against Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 and Newcastle United.
Although it will be an emotional return for Adkins to a place from where he kicked off his football career, the manager said that he was more focused on the fixture.
He said that his side will be up against a team who boast a rich history and tradition and recounted his time at Anfield as a youngster.
Nonetheless, he cautioned the team not to be disillusioned by the Reds stuttering recent form and treat them as a might Premier League force.
“Obviously they're going through a transition at this moment in time, but it is a game that we'll look forward to as we do every single game in the Premier League,” he told the reporters in an interview.
“Going to Merseyside is going to be great for everybody and great for all our supporters to go to Liverpool, a club steeped in tradition.”
The Saint Mary’s chief also stated that he would have loved playing for Liverpool, but made the decision of joining Tranmere Rovers in order to get more exposure and hence, polish his abilities better.
“I had the option to stay there before I decided to go to Tranmere Rovers, which was important from my career point of view,” he added.
Southampton have 12 points from their 14 matches, but could close the gap on Liverpool to just a single point by coming up with a win on Saturday.
