Southampton boss, Nigel Adkins, was buoyed up after his side’s comprehensive 2-0 win over Newcastle United at the Saint Mary’s Stadium on Sunday.
The victory elevated the battered Saints from the relegation zone to the 17th place in the table after 13 matches.
After experiencing a worst possible start to their campaign, Adkins’ unit have now recorded back-to-back wins and have assembled seven points from their previous three matches.
Last week, they churned out a 3-1 win over the bottom-ranked Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 at the club, who at one stage, had emerged as a frontrunner
to become the first manager in the EPL to get the axe this term.
After having returned to winning ways, the 47-year old wants his side to build a winning momentum and continue with their impressive recent form.
He claimed that their win on Sunday was even better than the one against QPR last week, and praised the defence for keeping their first clean sheet of the season.
“It was probably a better performance than last week,” he told the reporters in an interview.
“There was a good momentum about us and we carried that on today. It was a good performance. We scored two, but could have scored some more. The crowd were great, the players were great and we got a clean sheet.”
Despite having stopped their rut, the Saints face a daunting task of surviving in the English top-flight. Currently, they are just a point away from the drop zone, with the 19th ranked Reading having played a game less than them.
Nonetheless, the manager was relishing the challenge of improving on his side’s standing in the table. He claimed that the Premier League was the most difficult league in Europe, but felt that they had finally hit top form which can allow them to secure
a couple of more wins in the coming weeks.
“We worked very hard to get here and we'll continue to keep working hard. We have a forward momentum about ourselves,” he added.
