The 47-year-old tactician has expressed delight over his side’s victory over Brian McDermott’s men at home, but has stressed that his troops should have sealed the victory in a more comfortable manner.
Southampton manager, Nigel Adkins, was extremely pleased with his side’s 1-0 win over Reading at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, December 8.
The former Wigan Athletic player admitted that it was delightful to see his side keep a clean sheet, but also added that they had opportunities to score more goals.
“I am pleased that we have got a home victory, pleased that we have beaten someone close to us in the league – that is the important thing. I am delighted have a clean sheet. We scored one goal, could have scored more”, Adkins said while talking to reporters.
The Saints, who are currently sitting 15th on the English Premier League table, claimed their third victory at home in the ongoing season, and the 47-year-old coach admitted the value of winning game in front of home crowd.
“We talk about it all the time, it’s the importance of winning your home games. Obviously, winning at home, and winning against a team that were in and around us, was pleasing”, Adkins added.
The Saints dominated proceedings at home right from the kick-off, but failed to grab the lead in the opening 45 minutes. After the half-time break, the hosts continued to stage a dominant show, and eventually managed to break the deadlock in the 61st
minute through Jason Puncheon.
The home side did not sit back after taking the lead, and continued to press the Royals’ defence to extend their lead further. However, they failed to add any more goals until the full time whistle despite creating plenty of opportunities.
And Adkins admitted that his side should have scored more goals, while insisting that they deserved to bag all three points.
“We dominated the game, we were worthy winners. The amount of chances we created, if anything we should have put a few more in the back of the net”, the former Bangor City boss concluded.
Southampton will take on Sunderland in their next Premier League game on December 22.
