Southampton manager, Nigel Adkins, has hailed the way his side dealt with the pressure against Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 on Saturday.
The Hampshire-based club, who have suffered a dismal run of results since their return to the English top-flight, hammered the Hoops 3-1 at the Loftus Road Stadium in the battle of the relegation-entrenched teams.
The win, which was the Saints second of the campaign, brought their points tally to 8 from 12 games and sent them 4 points clear of the bottom spot. However, they are still pitted in the 19th place in the table.
The result will surely serve to ease the jittery nerves of the Southampton chief, who has been included in the race, by many, as the first manager to get sacked this term.
There will be no respite, though, for the QPR boss, who is still in search of his maiden win for the season. Following their yet another defeat at the weekend, that too at home, the Welshman has now been deemed as the favourite of becoming the first manager
to get the axe.
Nonetheless, Adkins attributed his side’s much needed win on Saturday to the strong and unyielding commitment of his players.
The 47-year old said that the performance has sent a strong signal towards all their critics that the team stood united at the face of any adversary. He also praised the fans for their ‘outstanding’ support.
“I thought the players were superb. It was a good performance, and the supporters were outstanding. It's a great three points away from home and we should enjoy it. They really lifted the players and they've done it consistently. We're together at this football
club and that was demonstrated in abundance today,” he told the reporters.
Southampton have conceded more goals and lost more matches than any other team in the competition thus far. However, they have now collected 4 points from their last two games – a stat which Adkins cited to prove that they were now headed in the right direction.
“It was a great performance last week and even the second half in the defeat to Tottenham there were a lot of positives to take from the work we've been doing. Today we've taken a well deserved three points,” he added.
