I am looking to get a new job producing newsletters for a company. I know how to use Publisher very well, but I am looking for some information on Indesign and Pagemaker. Which would be best? I am definitely willing to learn a new program, about how long does it take to learn either of the Adobe programs? How different are they from Publisher? If you have any suggestions, they would greatly be appreciated!

  1. If you have a specific company in mind, I would suggest that you find out what software they use for their newsletter.

Otherwise, I would suggest that InDesign is best suited for any "serious" newsletter publishing.  PageMaker was great in its day, but Adobe has, as I understand it, basically stopped developing it, and even offers a PageMaker-to-InDesign upgrade path.  InDesign is what I use for our quarterly newsletter.  My only complaint with it is that it doesn't import OpenOffice.org's native formats.

Most professionals would look at MS Publisher and call in unprofessional, and suitable more for the home than the office.

Note that there is also QuarkXpress, but I don't have personal experience with it, and may be overkill for a newsletter.

Of the three that you list, unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, I would highly recommend InDesign.

  2. see if you can get the indesign instruction cd on ebay

  3. Indesign is the best design software in modern graphic design. the other programs will do the job but it is the best software a graphics designer can learn.
