Question:

Adobe Premiere will not recognize my Canon Xh-A1?

I hook the camera up via firewire - the computer recognizes it, I go to "capture" in premiere and it says "can't activate recorder - try resetting the camera." Well I've reset, tried different settings, everything, I'm at my wits end. I can't seem to find anyone who can tell me what's wrong or what I can do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have Windows xp and Premiere CS3

  1. Check updates, then...

Go into capture preferences and look at the device control in the capture panel, youhave the choice to specify a generic firewire device, or can select the device control language by manufacturer and model (if supported)

  2. Update firmwire, use another connection for firmwire, power off, restart computer, turn on, & plus in. See what happens. Has it capture before?

  3. Well, I don't know if this is the problem, but try looking at the settings menu. I know how to do it on Final Cut--just go to the "capture scratch" window, but I'm not too sure how it works in Adobe.

First of all, check and see if the Adobe settings match that of the XH-A1. Because the computer recognized it, it isn't a connection problem, so I'm thinking its a settings error. Most likely I'd say its an HD/SD thing. If you shot in HD, make sure the settings in the program match that. Same with audio. If shot in 16 bit, make sure it says 48KHz when creating a new project. HD and SD are two different codecs, so it will not recognize if they do not match. I'm guessing you shot "HDV in 16:9", and most likely in 16bit, (if you shot in 12 bit, make sure it is 32KHz).

Oh, if that doesn't work, I find it's best NOT to access the capture menu when that little box comes up. It's better to open the program yourself, create a new project with the appropriate settings, then go to "file" and "capture".

Try that. Can't say I'm sure it'll work, but its worth a try....sorry I couldn't have been of more help. Anyways, good luck!!
