  1. Take the time to go and visit with a counselor instead (good search programs make adults do this and it's even more important because you're an adolescent and more likely to view all of this very differently within five years) and realize that waiting is in your best interest.

I know one person who met her birth mother when she was 14. It wound up being an extremely destructive force in her life and by age twenty they did not speak. My friend was very torn by the emotional upheaval and eventually dropped out of school as a result of it. Her parents should have prohibited her from making that kind of decision when she was too young to make it but they were afraid of alienating her by making a decision she would not like.

You have to remember that relinquishment is a very complicated process an doesn't happen because the birth parent has it all together

  2. A girl I've known since first grade was adopted. Her adoptive mom was sad that she wanted to look up her natural mom when she was in her teens, but she understood. Her adoptive mom actually saved a wedding announcement (for the natural mom)  she came across in a newspaper a few years after she adopted my friend. She gave it to her, and my friend found her in the phone book. They have met up & kept in touch, but her adoptive mom will always be mom to her. You can try googling her name and I know there are a couple websites where you can post info for free. Good luck and I hope you find the answers you're looking for.

  4. Are your a-parents helping you or are you being held hostage until 18.

Browse through similar posts here and you'll find helpful recommended sites. Sunny, Possum, Gershom, and Phil stand out to me, look for their recommendations.

  6. Knowing her name is one of the hardest steps. congrats that you've already got that!!! You also know her age. I found my mother on classmates.com since I knew her age, and last name. I would try those places where you can track her by possibly finding her graduation year.

There are also marriage indexes for some state depending on what state you were born in and if she got married there.

Some adoptees here have some links to give you and I'm sure they'll come along. In the meantime use these state resources ( free ) that will help you access free name and address finders.

  8. Dear Dana,

Gersh is right, the name is usually the hardest part. You can try looking on address searh sites like http://www.zabasearch.com/ or even the on-line white pages.

You can try looking on some of the social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook. (There are several sucess stories using this method!)

There are also several free internet registries - run a search for ones in the state where your first mom lives. And make sure you register with http://www.isrr.net/ - it is the largest reunion registry out there.

Follow your heart and never let people tell you how to feel! Most of us First Moms want to be found and lots of us are searching too! :)

Good luck to you, I hope you find all the answers you're searching for!!
