I was born in Peru but became American citizen a few years ago. My wife is from Brazil and she is permanent resident of the United States. We both live in the United States. We want to adopt a baby from Brazil and bring him to live to the United States. We don't know where to start. Could anyone please tell me what to do , where to go... etc... I will appreciate it

  1. Start at your local adoption agency. They should start to point you in the right way.

  2. Contact a local adoption agency that specializes in international adoption.  Since all states require different things, a reputable adoption agency in your area will best be able to answer your questions.

Sorry I could not be of more assistance.

    Good luck.

  3. Here are some helpful sites:

    http://brazil.adoption.com/

    http://travel.state.gov/family/adoption/...

Good thing your wife is still a Brazilian citizen. Without one of you being a Brazil passport-holder, adoption from Brazil would be very difficult.

  4. Google international adoptions for your city.  In Missouri we have a organization called International families that you join and they then lead you  thru the process and what  you need to do and know.  They then accompany groups of new parents to the country of adoption and help in that process also.   Good luck

  5. You need to find an adoption agency with a Brazil program.  Here is the website of a very reputable agency:

    www.ftia.org

It is a big advantage that your wife is from Brazil.  Most countries with international adoption programs give preference to families with a parent from the child's native country.    You do need to be aware that you'll have to stay in Brazil about 45 days to adopt your child.
