Does anyone know how long it takes to adopt a child from India? Also could use advise on whether it's better to adopt a baby or an older child (i.e. 4 year old)

  1. Go to:

    http://travel.state.gov/family/adoption/...

to find out about the process & requirements.

    Go to:

    http://www.adoptivefamilies.com/search/a...

and search for India as the country to find agencies that have programs in India.  Then you can go to the agency website and find out how long their process takes.  It will often vary depending on what special needs you might be open to and which agency you work with.

If India is like most countries, if you're open to an older child the wait will tend to be shorter.

As to whether it's better to adopt an infant or older child, it depends on you.  Go to http://www.tapestrybooks.com and read up on older child adoption.  It can be a huge blessing, but only if you're prepared for it.  We adopted two school age kids and it hasn't been without challenges OR joys. :-)

  2. Waiting Time

After your homestudy is approved, it takes one to 12 months to be matched with a child. This period may be shorter if you're of Indian heritage or adopting a child who's already waiting for parents. Children are ready to travel home six to 10 months after your dossier and child acceptance documents are received in India.

Visit this site and it'll give u more details.

  3. I looked into adopting from India and one of the adoptive parents had to be Hindu.  If neither parent was Hindu, it was possible to adopt but very difficult.

    Maybe the rules have changed.

  4. adopting a baby is easier because the baby will get used to you

the 4 year old and up may not be cooperative

and the way they were raised could have been way different than ur ways of raising

    tat may cause some trouble
