This is a couple that I know that has gotten divorced and both are having issues with keeping the child. They do not want to put her in any agency or foster home. So they are willing on giving me parental rights. She is a five year old girl and they live in Turkey. I want to adopt her and bring her here to the states. What is the process, what should I do? Is there anyway I can get more information?

  1. I agree with the first answer, you'll need an international adoption specialist to get you through the paperwork.  The process will take a while, so you may want to arrange for her to "vacation" in the U.S. and stay with you while the adoption is being finalized.

  2. Contact a lawyer who specializes in international adoption.

Do these people want to give their child up permanently, or just temporarily until they can straighten their lives out?  If they're thinking just temporary, adoption is not revocable.

  3. Hello - I adopted internationally and perhaps can help with this situation.

The adoption process is in two parts: [1] gaining permission from the USA to bring the child in as an American citizen and [2] obtaining a legal adoption from the nation of Turkey.

The American Embassy in Ankara is the place to start to even determine if this is possible. They actually have a web page with information on adoptions. I just read through it and it is long and complex.

According to the Embassy, private adoptions are permissible in Turkey. There are numerous requirements.

Good luck to you. You are thinking of helping a child to a much better life.
