Question:

Adopting at Petsmart

Hello, I am looking forward to adopting my first cat.

My sister and I have looked through all the shelters near our home but haven't found the right cat yet.

I was hoping to find a cat in need at our local Petsmart, but i was wondering how much adoption was?

It includes vaccinations, de-worming, etc.

Please help.

  1. Can you give us your zip code?

  2. Petsmart gets its cats from local shelters. The adoption fees are up to the organization they get the cats from.  In the store I work in the fees range from $65 to $200, so just go in and look, the prices will be written on their info sheets.

  3. I live in the Houston, TX, area and was at PetSmart today. There were five cats for adoption, for $100 each. I don't know about your area though. Sometimes shelters will take some of their pets to petsmart or petco on Saturdays too.

There are shelters that aren't listed on petfinder, and shelters don't list ALL of their pets all the time either. Do a search in google/yahoo for animal shelters and you'll find a couple that might not be on petfinder. Then there's 1-800-save-a-pet.com. Also, a few people on craigslist and kijiji have kittens or cats that have been well taken care of, but maybe someone in the house is allergic. I know I saw one near me where a woman just had a baby and the baby is allergic to the cat, so she has to give the cat away asap.

I got my kitten at animal control. They charged me $50 for him, but gave me a $40 voucher for having him neutered, so basically he cost me $10. Some of those cats are family pets that have run away, or surrendered pets for different reasons (moving, allergies, etc.).  I really like the idea of saving a pet that most people won't get because it may not already have its shots or anything. When I got my kitten there, I took him straight to the vet to make sure he didn't have anything too serious before I got attached, and he had worms and fleas pretty bad, but those were easily fixed.

  4. Not sure but I do know that Petsmart gets animals from the local animal shelter randomly. They actually gave me an adoptable bird once. It was free because it came in abnormal, was missing a toe. Was a Black Hooded Nun finch, was regularly $69.99 bird. It didn't live long though so it had other problems as well.

  5. theyre adoption fee is over $100 dollars. that includes vaccinations, which is worming.

  6. Having bought a canary at Petsmart, only to discover it had an enlarged liver (inbreeding the probable cause) and dies shortly thereafter, I would rather get a pet from a breeder ....
