Adopting cat/s? Any opinions?

Me and my friend are 19 and do work and go to university.

However, we have moved out and are looking at adopting a cat/cats.

Well, we're going to!

As we are busy, would you reccomend 2 cats? or one? And what gender?

We were thinking two, male and female?

- But we do want them to get along well.

Thanks for any opinions x

  1. a lot of times at shelters they will have cats that are friends that they preferably want to adopt out together. this would be good because then they have a friend when you guys are out and about since you are busy. try the SPCA or your local pound.

  2. Take it slow, get one, a animal shouldn't be a spontaneous idea, if you do end up getting two get them both fixed asap 2 cats can turn into 8 cats easy

  3. get oneswith there wisker foward, because that means there frindley

  4. Litter mates would probably be your best bet. Either way, I would recommend you get them together so one doesn't get used to "single life"! one male and one female would be good, two males could be bad, they might compete for territory.

  5. Okay, since you and a friend are involved you need to think into the future, i.e. when the two of you go your own ways.  If you get one cat who will take the cat? Two might seem better- but remember, you will both grow attached to both cats which could possibly make separation hard. Plus, both cats will become accustomed to living together, and that will make the separation of the two difficult.

How much have you thought this out? Are you prepared to take on a 15-20 year commitment? Remember, you're going to be taking a life into your own hands. A cat will rely on you for everything - because unlike you, he can't just go to the store and buy himself food.

You probably just wanted an answer like "get two cats! make sure they are litter mates!" but I think you should make sure you want the responsibility of getting a cat or cats. Plus, are you prepared to give up the money you place down as a pet deposit? (yes, you will lose it in most situations - I believe they claim it in the "cleansing and removing allergens" clause)

If you've thought this through, and are still set on getting a cat or cats, its really up to you. There are Pros and Cons for both. You just have to decide what you feel best.

  6. If you can afford to care for two then by all means, adopt two.  Shelters often had bonded pairs so you may be able to adopt cats that already know eachother.  If not, most cats adapt quickly to another cat so it's just a matter of slowwwwwwly introducing them.  Start out with one cat and keep it in just one room of your house with it's own food, water and litter.  Let it get used to that room and then once it seems at ease let it explore the rest of your home.  When you get the second cat do the same thing - keep it isolated in one room with its own food, water and litter.  Put an old tshirt with the new cat to get its scent on it then put it with the existing cat and back again.  After the new cat seems at ease then try introducing them.

Sine you have a roommate you could even get two cats at the same time that don't know eachother and just keep one in each of your rooms and do the tshirt swap so they get to know eachother's scent.

Not sure where you're living.  If you're renting do be sure to check first if you're allowed to have pets.  And if you're in student housing most do NOT allow pets.  Also be sure that you're not too busy to have cats.  They will enjoy eachother's company but they need yours as well as well as your time to scoop the litter, feed them, etc, etc.

Definitely get adult cats over kittens.  Adult shelter cats are WONDERFUL - I have three adopted as adults.  They're all the sweetest, most loving, most playful cats I've ever known and they also readily accepted eachother as well.  Your cats do not have to be litter mates to bond to eachother and gender is really irrelevant.  Mine are all different ages and different breeds and it's one big happy family!

  7. you should questions yourself if you have the time to give it love and take care of it! :D than decide!
