Question:

Adopting from Russia?

My husband and I are planning to adopt from Russia.

If you adopted from Russia I'm interested in hearing about the process.

Especially anything unexpected.

I've already read through all the information I got from the adoption board and they make it seem very straightforward.

Did anything happen during the adoption process that you didn't expect?

The adoption board is making the process seem so easy.

I find it difficult to believe it could be that easy.

I'm only referring to the actual adoption process here and not once you have the child home with you.

Is it really a simple process?

  1. What adoption board?

We did not adopt from Russia. The program did not offer the  strong history and reputation for forthright communication that we were looking for. However a multitude of happy families have successfully formed through international adoption from Russia.

When you look at program overviews they will include generalities but generally will not provide data on disruption or inaccuracies in medical records. They just tell you how the program works. The Russian program works very well for families who do not meet other countries' qualification requirements, have an affinity for the culture or are white and uninterested in being a conspicuous adoptive family.

If you want to learn more about risks and potential problems, a strong adoption agency is going to be your best source. Also, do remember that all International Adoption programs are affected by world affairs and diplomatic relations. Should we have to take a very hard line on the situation in Georgia, that is the kind of thing that can lead to a change in foreign adoption policy.
