Adopting in CA.?

So we are supposed to be adopting a new baby girl. The mother has given rights to a friend of hers, so that she can pick up the baby. The mother doesn't want any contact with the adoptive parents, or to see her baby when it's born. So this lady once she gets back with the baby is supposed to meet with us and an attorney and transfer rights to us. I just talked to State Adoptions and they said this happens all the time! Then we just get our home-study and stuff done in order to have an adoption take place.

Has anyone done this or know of someone that has? Any advice??

  1. Never heard of it. In most adoptions you have to get the home study and other things done prior to bringing a baby home. The state wants to make sure your home is safe way before you ever bring the child home.

It sounds a little fishy to me.

  2. That sounds very fishy to me.  I wonder if she realizes that she can't just pretend like she didn't have a baby, just because she didn't see her?  I wonder if she realizes that it's going to hurt like h**l for the rest of her life, no matter if she sees her baby or not?  I wonder if she knows her baby will miss her and long for her whether she sees her or not?  I wonder if she'll change her mind once she has given birth and can no longer deny her little human being's existence?

Don't get too attached to the idea of adopting this child.  She could change her mind.

check out that link has information about adoption law in CA.

  4. Our son that we are adopting on Thursday, was removed from his mom at five days old. She asked us to take him, which, she did have that right. They did a background check on us that day, came to our home that night and he came to live with us, two days later. We later had to be fingerprinted and all the other things involved in being a non-relative care-giver.

What puzzles me, in your situation is, what authority does this lady have to decide who gets adopts the baby? We had custody of our soon to be son, but we could not hire a babysitter without that person being cleared by the state. Is she a caseworker, adoption worker or relative?

Is she asking for any money? Who is this attorney?

Please take the time to ask her some serious questions, before you take this baby. You sound excited, and you should be, but be wise.

  5. Black Market adoption - report this to the authorities

The  homestudy has to be complete before you get your hands on a baby! not retrospectively.

  6. YIKES! :o

I agree with Gaia! Rather than setting myself up for potential failure, or worse, the possibility of an illegal or unethical adoption, I would have to pass on this one! You have NO assurances that this child is not stolen or whatever!

Does this really happen all the time?! :(  If so, I am more concerned than before about the state of "private" adoptions in the US!!

Best of luck to you! I hope you find a "cleaner" situation! You and your child deserve an ethical, honest and non-fishy situation!!
