we are having a problem and someone is poisoning the cats in my neighborhood. i have a plan to catch them and give them nice and loving homes, but ther are alot of them. i have called the s.p.c.a and the animal control here in midlothian texas and no one can help me. spca told me that they have to put down all the strays and they are not adoptable, (which makes no sence to me) and animal control will not adopt them out either. can anyone help me?!

  1. Start your own non-profit Cat / Kitten rescue. Advertise for foster families, get vets to agree to discounted spaying and neutering to those who adopt through you.  You collect the fees for the participating vets in advance as good faith adoption of each pet.  If they prepay for spaying or neutering chances are they will follow through. Also you may be able to obtain donations from local pet supply stores, such as food, etc,.  See if you and foster families can utilize pet stores on weekends to display adoptable pets.  An example of a pet rescue is linked below. Keep in mind what requirements you set is up to you. Email me if you'd like.

  2. I love what you're thinking about doing, but you will probably have to devote quite a bit of time and money to your plan.  You will have to get humane traps, trap the cats one by one, get them checked out by a vet, and then find them homes.  I've put a link below to your local Freecycle group.  Freecycle is a group that's free to join and allows members to request items they need or offer items they want to get rid of.  My local Freecycle allows offers of pets, and I see people doing it all the time (with good results).  It's a way for you to choose who adopts the cats and make sure they go to good homes.

I think you might want to get others in your area involved in your effort.  You also might want to call some vets and see if any would check out the cats (and also spay and neuter) at a low cost, given the good work you're trying to do.

Good luck.  I wish you and those cats the best!!

  3. i am so sorry that you have to watch that and no one will help you. that is terrible! I volunteer at a cat shelter and we do all that we can. luckily we are a no kill shelter, which is what you should be looking for. unfortunately i am all the way up in maine, otherwise i would love to help you. see if any of the cats are friendly if they are contact the local shelter again and see if they can at least help with getting them spayed and you can work on their placement. please email me for more details or ideas, i will ask my shelter if they have any other suggestions!

  4. You are seeing a small window into a very big problem that exists in every community.   This is why so many of us get so angry with people who do not spay and neuter and allow their  cats to have litter after litter.  It is terrible.

The spca's do not have the staff available to try and attempt to tame semiferal animals, it is very time consuming.

You could do a few things, you can try to catch one make it your pet and have it altered.   You can contact a rescue group in your area and let them know your area is a hotspot.   They may have a trap neuter release program available.

    Good luck to you.
