Adopting my sister's baby....?

I'm 18. She is 16.

I graduated high school when I was 16 and now have a 2 year degree in medical office management. I have my own home and I am getting married in about 2 months.

She is still in 9th grade and is 2 years behind in school. She just found out she is pregnant.

The guy is 19 and has a charge on him for having s*x with a 12 year old (not my sister but another girl).

If my sister agreed to let me adopt and raise the child as my own, will the father be able to do anything about it? If we end up going to court would he get the baby or whould I? No one else in my family can handle the baby right now and we don't want it going out of the family... What do you think?

I would wait for him to be convicted of a s*x crime against a minor. The judge would most likely not allow him parental rights. Let's not forget that your sister has to agree to this too. Try to be patient and wait for the right time.

The father would have to sign away his parental rights and if you took him to court, because of the fact that he has charges against him and you don't, you would definitely get the baby.

i think that that would be a very mature thing to do.. however, find out if you could just be the guardian until your sister is old enough to raise it on it's own.. if she ever wants to do that.. please make sure she stays in school! you're very brave to be doing this. good luck with everything and feel free to message me if you want. i'm a good listener. i'm 20.

I think its wonderful that your helping your sister. You have a kind heart.

The best way to keep the child within the family is if your sister raises him. She's only 16 but that doesn't mean she's not capable of raising him. She'll have to make some sacrifices but if you look at the big picture it could keep her out of more trouble.  

If she were my sister and my parents wouldn't let her live with them, I would welcome her and the child into my home.

It will be hard on everyone but think about whats in the best interest of the innocent child.

The father will always have the ability to fight for custody despite what people here tell you. It will cost him alot of money but its a possibility he could get custody.

Although it not "socially acceptable" for your sister to raise a child at such a young age, that shouldn't negate the fact that she is capable of raising a child just as well as many older adults.

If she's early in her pregnancy she may also want to consider abortion. That's if she's finds it as a viable option.

thats really sweet of you and your life does seem to be right on track for a baby but just make sure your doing the right thing, don't rsh into it your still only 18..............you might have to go to court if the father refuses but you'll still prob get the baby since he has a crimminal record and your sister says she's willing to let u adopt...good luck :)

Where are your parents at in all this? Can she live with you and raise the baby at your house with your help. If you are serious about this I would call lawyer about the father issue.

You would have a better chance at getting the baby.  With the father having the background he has, I doubt that he has a warm, loving home that he could take the baby to, even if the court gave him custody.

You and your sister need to get legal representation ASAP, make your intentions known, and start the legal ball rolling.  The father will have to be acknowledged, given his say-so, but hopefully he can be persuaded to sign away his rights, and the adoption could proceed peacefully.

He can be charged with statuatory rape.  I would make a deal with him.  Sign over his rights or be charged.  She just found out she's pregnant, that gives him 8 months to s***w with you.
