Question:

Adopting twins?

I have this offer to adopt 2 year old twins. The mother abandoned them at the hospital when they were 2 months old and the father is unknown . The hospital contacted the sister ( the twins aunt). Aunt has been raising them for the past 2 years. The aunt can no longer take care of the kids financially seeing that she already have 2 young kids of her own. The natural mother is an alcoholic and she has not been in contact with the babies or the aunt for over a year now.

I need some information about how to do this, I live in Georgia and I want to do this legally. Any advice would be of tremendous help.

Thank you

  1. Just contact an adoption attorney.  They will be able to do all the legal paperwork for you.  Good luck!

  2. I just wanted to pipe in. I am currently with custody of my 19 month old nephew. My sister abused baby, and CPS and police were involved, I was called, (I didn't even know baby existed...), and overnight i became full time mommy to 8 week old infant.

He is technically not a ward of the state....CPS called it an 'intervention'. However, not all states are the same. I DO get medical assistance, and early intervention work with speech therapists, physical therapists, and special education. Yet, I am custodial guardian...and he is not a ward of the state, nor was he ever in foster care.

It has been one year with no support, and no visitation from my 'son's mother, and in the state of VA, i can now terminate her rights, since she has 'abandoned' the baby. Once the judge terminates her parental rights, I am free to move to adopt the baby.

Once I 'adopt' the baby, he will no longer be eligible for the state assistance. Even though he is not in fostercare, nor a ward of the state, he is considered abandoned, and all the medical help we recieve they send Child support enforcement after his mother to reimburse them. If i adopt, he is no longer eligible since my personal living situation would not qualify.

you have to have both mom and dad's parental rights terminated. And here in the state of VA, even if dad is 'not known' unless it was incest or rape, all possible 'dad's must be listed and investigated before rights are terminated...

I think you really must research this with your state, and thier state....I'd hate for a dad to show up a few years down the road screaming for his kids......

    Good luck to you.

  3. go to this site... http://www.adoption.org/adopt/georgia-st...

Twins are amazing! I have twin girls and they do take allot of work but it is wort it. But please they are 2 now just make sure you want this for the rest of there lives and yours, they do not need to go to any other homes.

  4. I'm guessing the aunt is fostering the kids.  I would ask her for the caseworker's phone number.  If I were you, I would make every effort to go through DHS for this adoption, because the twins will probably have medical and mental health needs that the state can help provide assistance for in the future.  Even if you think you have the money for it, don't bet on it!  It can get extremely expensive.  If you adopt through the state, then you will be able to get medical/mental health coverage for the twins until they turn 18, plus possibly a subsidy.

If they are no longer wards of the state...well, then that previous paragraph probably isn't going to help you, and I can't either.  lol.  I'm not all that knowledgeable about non-foster care adoptions.  Good luck to you!
