My husband and I have decided to adopt but need ideas on how to raise that kind of money. They say it can cost 10 to 20 thousand dollars.

  1. Depending on the type of adoption you do, it can cost even more than that!  Sometimes less, if you adopt through the US Foster Care System.

First of all, there is an Adoption Tax Credit.  You will qualify for it when you file your taxes for the year in which the adoption was finalized.  It will, in effect, reimburse you for some of the expenses you paid out.

Depending on where you work, you may be able to get some funds to use towards your adoption from your employer.  Contact your Human Resources Office or  your employer.  Some companies have a policy in place, because it also offers them a tax credit.  Some may not have such a policy, but it never hurts to ask because they may be willing to contribute.

Have a yard sale.  You can get rid of some clutter in your home (which I am sure we ALL need to do) and raise money for your adoption at the same time.  You will need the extra room for the child and all the things they need, anyway.

Instead of going out to eat, have your meals at home.  It is much less expensive.  You can still make it romantic by dimming the lights, picnicing on the floor, etc.  Or, eat meals at home and then go out for dessert only.

There are other things in your daily life you can reduce or cut out-if you live in the city, walk more and drive less to conserve gas (which is at outrageous prices right now).  Instead of renting movies, borrow them from the library or find something to watch on television.  If you pay for premium satellite channels-do you really watch all of them?  A less expensive package may work for you.

If you have not already done so, decide what type of adoption you wish to complete (private, international, foster care?) and then consult the agency or attorney.  Not all of the fees are due at one time, and the adoption process can take a couple of years or more so the cost is spread out over time.

  2. It should not cost that amount if you go to a government adoption agency, demonstrate positive parental characteristics and earn a reasonable income. No way.  Not if you go to the right adoption agency.

  3. Babydoll, you are not in a stable enough place to be adopting.  You have asked questions about how to convince your husband to adopt, and questions about how to raise money to adopt, and ......on and on.  Take a deep breath, slow down, back up and re-think this situation.

Go get some solid marriage counseling first.  No child should come into a home and family where things are so unsettled.  It is just not fair.

Work on your marriage, your finances, your communication, and get into a stable place where you and hubby are on the same page with life, then proceed to look into adoption, or not.  You don't have to be perfect, but you do have to be stable!

  4. i would ignore joslin's response it seems likes she's been crashing alot of hopeful adoptive parents hope, i too am in the same situation.  The only way you can chunk out 10 -20 thousand dollars for an adoption is if you were rich!  and I bet you like me are stable and everything is going good just longing for that love of a child

let me know if you have any luck please  and good luck to you as well!

  5. go through the foster care system, tons of children needing families, rights of the parents are generally already terminated.

plus the state will pay for all of your classes and home studies and they will pay you a stipend check until the child is 18.

and just because the baby is in foster care does not mean there is anything wrong with it, mostly it is something wrong with the biological parents!
