Question:

Adoption Laws in MA?

Does anyone know of a site that could tell me if there is a law that states that people adopting a child from Social Services in Massachusetts need to finalize that adoption in Massachusetts instead of in the recieving state?

The only answers the workers out there are giving us is that "they might reimburse our plane tickets" and "that's just the way they do things here."

thanks.

  1. If you can't afford the expenses of adoption don't adopt.

  2. I dont know about the law but have attached websites that provide info about MA laws.

I also dont know what your question had to do with being able to afford adoption???

  3. I know it *can* be done...or at least that it could be done 30+ years ago.  I was born in MA and my adoption was finalized in a different state (over a year later).  During all but the first two weeks of the 'waiting' I lived in the receiving state with my adoptive parents.  This info. is pretty outdated (more than 30 years) but it has been done in the past.

Out of curiousity, why are you intent on adopting from MA?  If you are not already working with a specific caseworker there then I am assuming (please correct me if I'm wrong) that you are not speaking of adopting a *specific* child.  Why not adopt in the state where you live?  It will certainly make things a lot easier for your child when s/he grows up -- I speak from my own experience on that point.  Unless, making things easier for your (future) child is not something you are concerned about.  I'm not saying you aren't...it just makes me wonder.

    Good luck!

  4. Most, if not all, states require that this type of adoption is finalized in the originating state, not the receiving state.  Why would you think this would be an exception?  The state is the child's guardian.
