Adoption Question: If I had a sister who was put up for adoption in NY in 1950 where would I start looking?

This seems very unlikely, but there is a possibility that I have a sister I never met. I would like to find out for sure, but don't know where to start. Again, it is very unlikely, but who would make something like this up?

  1. hi pat-

you can start with the issr registry.  http://www.plumsite.com/isrr/

also, check in with yahoo groups- they have a few for ny searches.

    also, adoption crossroads.  http://www.adoptioncrossroads.org/

feel free to email me if i can be of more help!

  2. As long as your sister was both born AND adopted in NY State you can sign up to the sibling registry with the State:

    http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_reco...

Sign up to http://www.unsealedinitiative.org/ and support the right of adopted people and their families to know each other as adults without interference from the State

Other good registries are http://isrr.net/ and http://registry.adoption.com/ although there are numerous others on the net, so register with as many as possible.

  3. http://adopteerights.net/nulliusfilius/?...

above will take you to the laws of NY. IF you are a sibling then you can get some non identifying information if its available.

I would also go to the link at the very bottom of that page that is the yahoo group for NY searching list. Joan there will help you a great deal!! Shes awesome!
