Adoption Search?

I was adopted in march of 89 in New Jersey and would like to begin the search for my birth family but have no idea where to start. I wanted to know if any one had any advice? Thanks so much!

Have you spoken to your adoptive parents about this?  They probably have records that will help with your search or may know your birthparents names already.  They are probably nervous about your search but gently remind them that the information they have truly belongs to you and you are now old enough to decide what to do with it.  

Good luck but remember that not all searches end happily and you must be prepared for that.

try to get on cousinconnect.com that could help. sometimes when you get on someone can help you and they do try. its hard but if you know where you were adopted what court and city it was that helps soetimes there are sealed documents you can have. do you know your real name then? if you do you can write health depart in the sate and get birthcertifcate.

That kind of information is usually confidential, and if youve never met your parents before chances are they had a closed adoption and they kinda wanted it that way. If they wanted you to find them they wouldve given all information to your adopted parents. I think if you really want to know the first place would be your adopted parents.

Go online & register with every adoption reunion site you can find.  You never know where you'll find your birth family.

You can contact the agency the adoption went through.  You can contact the Vital Records office of NJ to request any documents they have.  

You can contact a private investigator & have him/her do the search for you.

If you know the hospital adoption agency and anything about your birth parents that would be a great start I would start with the agency and then a national registry that way if they were looking for you they would have a way of reaching out...Now my mom gave a baby up for adoption in 1961 I registered because I really wanted a sister....it took about 10 years but my sister went to the adoption agency to find out about medical things and because I had registered they knew how to contact my mom.....Now I live next door to my sister 9 years later.....1989 things should not be as difficult..

There are many online registries many free a few paid. You place your information on them and if the BP are seeking or other family members they put you in touch.

I actually found my adoptive daughter several years ago with the help of one of these.

Also all states have diffferent laws regarding what is allowed to be given. many states will give only Non identifying medical and that type stuff. However many times some of that information can help in a search. Most search angels will tell you to get that information first.

You can do this by contacting the agency that handled the adoption. i know for my state it is a matter of contacting the local Social Services for my own search. (Yes I am also a adoptee and I am searching for my BP's)

They do charge for the information However if you are limited income they will supply for free.

Just placing and searching on as many registries as you can. Also checking the laws a result has that in that list that explains them.

Also do other searches maybe a yahoo group search for your state and adoption search. Also adoption support forums and message boards etc. There are so many resources out there. It just takes a little google work. There are also people who will help you for free out here too. That have had their own search and now hope to help others.

It can be a bag of mixed emotions. Many times it can take a while even after finding the person to be ready to meet in person lots of feelings held in etc. So be open to taking it slow
