I’ve hear that peoples with mental diseases can’t adopt. I am Bipolar and I am really interested about adopting. Is this real: If I am mental ill I can’t adopt?

  1. that's true for good reason, imo.  kids need stability.  adopted and foster kids need more stability.

    sorry....

  2. Yes, it is real. In many cases, social workers will automatically toss your application if you have had mental illness.  If you have never been diagnosed or treated, then you will not be barred as they do not require physical or psychological testing.

[edited to add] Don't know the rules in UK.

  3. I'm not familiar with requirements for citizens of the UK but when doing an international adoption each country has their stance on this. Example, China changed it's policy and no one with any mental diagnosis can adopt. This even includes depression so I am sure Bipolar would not be accepted.

  4. Well if it were up to me, I would say sure as long as you can support your child and treat him/her with love and care. I don't even know why its a law at all.

  5. call and talk with a lawyer, maybe he or she can let you know for sure , good luck
