My sister is 6 weeks pregnant. If she does not have a miscarrige, she is giving the baby to my husband and I. We are going to do a legal adoption. How much will it cost and what is the process?

  1. You'll need a lawyer, and I honestly don't know how much that will cost.  A few thousand probably...?  Call a lawyer and ask.

Meantime, here are some fabulous reading materials:

  2. It depends on the state you live in. It can cost as little as $750 up to thousands.  Just be aware that the father of the baby has to approve the adoption. He has to sign away all his parental rights or the adoption will not happen. You can go to your local family law court house and has them for the adoption paperwork. Your sister will most likely have to go to some counseling sessions at the county so she is totally disclosed all her rights etc. Then you can file the paperwork.  The process will take you approximately 6 months to a year to finalized everything.

  3. It depends. We are adopting from a friend (so no agency, just an adoption attorney) and the costs total will be around $4000 plus $1,000 for the homestudy.
