I'd love to hear from both parents and children (might be adults now!)

Wondering your advice, thoughts?

Thanks

  1. I was in foster care for a few years and one of the placements was with an African American single mother and her children. My brother and I were in middle school at the time. We are caucasian, and if we would go out for a night with them or shopping or when we were picked up from school we would get lots of stares. Our foster mom's friends also made snide comments about it. It was frustrating but just something that you deal with. Eventually I was adopted by a family of the same race and my parents began to foster all races and ages of children. My mom was involved in tons of groups, garden club, gourmet dinner club, wine club...just crazy clubs that she did with friends and we also lived in a pretty wealthy area. When my mom would host her clubs there were always questions and comments and the older women definitely had their opinion.

I loved having such a wide variety of people around me and living with me. I think it made it easier for me to get along with so many different kind of people. Everyone with their looks and opinions can just shove it.

  2. my brother was adopted from korea when he was a baby, and my family is white. He fits in perfectly, he is just like a birth brother.

  3. My wife and I are white and we have three children.  The oldest is East Indian and was adopted at 8 months old and is now 15.  Our middle one was born to us and is now 13.  Our youngest (for now) is almost 6 months old and she is First Nations (North American Indian).

Thus far we have had no problems or issues with being a mixed race family and we don't anticipate any issues.  If we ever have any we will deal with them as they crop up but for now we are enjoying being who we are.  We have always viewed ourselves as a family first and have never dwelled too much on the different races.  Its brought a richness to who we are as a family over and above anything else we could have had going for us.
