  1. It was an option back then. I was adopted in 1968 in Edinburgh and instead of a birth certificate I have an adoption certificate which gives me certain details about my natural parents, but not their names or how I can find them

  2. I was born and adopted in the UK by a US military couple in 1966.  My birth was registered.  I suppose anything is possible though.

UK birth indexes are online at findmypast.com or on ancestry.com both are fee based sites.

The UK allows for adoptees to open their records with an approved agency.  Check out this site for info on how to proceed.

If the adoption was finalized in Scotland.  Check this site.

    Good luck

  3. no its not true about the child not having the mothers name,i was born in 1966 and my adoptive parents had me at 3 days old and i had my real parents name on birth certificate.

  4. i think the adopted parents register the baby.

  5. It might be true.  My daughter was born in 1963, and was taken from me about 3 weeks later.  I honestly cannot remember if I registered her birth, but I do not remember doing so, and I know that the adoptive parents registered her.  People were far slacker then about the rights of natural mothers and everybody believed that adoption was for ever and that the child would never find out, or find her/his real parents.

I was in a home for Unmarried Mothers, but mine was in Stoke Newington.  It was a horrible time, your Mum has all my sympathy

  6. We adopted our son in 1968 and his natural mother and father were on his birth certificate. He came to us at 6 weeks old so that  he could have all his health checks etc.He knows all that we know about his natural parents and the fact that he has half brothers and sisters from his natural parents, should he wish to contact them.So far he has chosen not to but good luck with finding your siblings.
